Good question, thanks! My PCs run Lubuntu 16.04. Nano shows the emojis
there. But in my remote terminals nothing I tried helped so far. And
it doesn't matter which nano I use.

So there is hope! :)
I tried several different terminals (xterm, lilyterm, lxterminal,
screen and tmux). I tried setting LANG + LC_ALL to en_US.UTF-8.
I wonder whether it is an issue with libncursesw5 being version
5.9+20140913-1+b1 on the oldstable Debian. Once I ssh into a Debian 9
(libncursesw5 6.0+20161126-1) or Ubuntu 16.04 (libncursesw5
6.0+20160213) nano shows the emojis.
