Yes, but the same code works as expected in `emacs -Q', as long as I start with an empty `package-user-dir' directory:
(defvar package-enable-at-startup nil) (require 'package)(add-to-list 'package-archives '("melpa-stable" . "http://stable.melpa.org/packages/"))
(add-to-list 'package-archives '("org" . "http://orgmode.org/elpa/") t) (setq package-user-dir (expand-file-name "~/elpa/")) (package-initialize)My installation in "~/elpa/" could be corrupted. By the way, even if Emacs doesn't list the last Company version, it correctly identifies the currently installed version as obsolete.
