It looks as if the data connection from ftp isn't coming back (by default,
ftp opens a second connection to transfer the data to you, that would be
the case for the results of the `ls' command). This can happen if you are
behind an NAT: unless the NAT takes special measures, the connection
request will end up nowhere.
Try setting the variable `ange-ftp-try-passive-mode' to t (you can set
this variable through `configure'. Perhaps it helps.
