I find it simplest to consolidate backups to a single directory:
;; universal directory
(setq backup-directory-alist `(("." . "~/.emacs.d/AUTOSAVE/")))
and periodically expunge them manually, simply by opening the directory in
dired, type '~', and flush them in one go.
