He means that after you edit .Xdefaults, you use the command
$ xrdb .Xdefaults
to update the databse of X variables.
I just use M-! xrdb .Xdefaults RET in Emacs. Of course if you're using
Emacs, you may need to restart Emacs, or open a new frame ;)
