I made some quick tests and according to them, the new code is
faster than the old version. Besides, the patch looks much better
than my old hack.

I committed the new version to CVS and its now used as default.
The old code is still there if someone wants to make comparisons.
Some simple timing printouts can be activated by setting
DEBUG_TIME_MYSQL to YES in high_mysql.c.
