Even though there's still the issue of patented formats, I like to buy those DVDs to show my support for the creator/distributor's dismissal of DRM. So far I have Revolution OS, Elephants Dream and Big Buck Bunny. Both parts of Steal This Film have their DVD versions which can be downloaded from their site. If you like the films then you can give them a donation.
I had heard of Steal This Film but haven't watched it yet. Their website doesn't offer a non-encumbered format and the Ogg Theora Vorbis version on The Pirate Bay has zero seeders. I see that they're working on a movie based on the documentaries, but considering the subject and their prior releases, it's unlikely that they'll release it as a boxed DVD.
However, I have just sent them an e-mail asking to provide their films in a free format. I'll let you know their answer.
