gcmd uses exiv2 library for handling image metadata. Starting from
version 0.16 (10-Jan-2008), exiv2 is capable of XMP support.
There is a nice cmdline tool 'exiv2' for metadata handling, you can use
for dealing with XMP. Look at http://www.exiv2.org/sample.html#usage for
more details.
