[ft] How do I configure freetype to build without versioning?

I'm trying to build freetype as a shared lib without soname versioning. Apparently its possible to pass the 'avoid-version' flag with autoconf/automake/libtool ... but I'm having trouble figuring this out (I have no experience with automake and libtool). I'd appreciate any advice.
