I wanted it to look less "heavy", but I guess the only way to do that (since the border is already just 1 pixel thick), would be to change its color.

How shall this work?  If you make the border thinner than a full
pixel, *of course* it gets greyish!  Do you have an example from
another source which demonstrates what you want?
