I just found this, which looks like an excellent resource:

It's not that this page is particularly hard to find; it's just that I  
wish
that it had been made more obvious. Perhaps the end of
http://freetype.sourceforge.net/freetype2/docs/tutorial/step2.html
might do good by pointing users there.
