Hi,

If you refer to fonts distributed with XFree86 - there are plans to stop 
distribute bitmap fonts in .bdf.gz and .pcf.gz, and swicth to TrueType or 
OpenType fonts with embedded bitmaps.

FreeType2 support TrueType and OpenType fonts with embedded bitmapos.
You may want to check this with 'ftview' demo.
