Don't use ttf2pfb, it's obsolete and no longer supported.  Try ttf2pt1
instead (this works with CJK fonts also, I was told).

You may try any of the FreeType 2 test programs which probably give a
proper error message -- FT2 supports Type1 fonts natively.
