Ok, I got it to work by downloading another copy of the freetype 2.0.1
archive. In this archive the .png files are readable by internet
exploder 5.01. It appears that the first one I downloaded was broken
in some way. Can't remember where I got it from, unfortunately.

BTW, is there any change of adding the html API description to the
docs directory in the archive?
