I think this is fixed in the current snapshot.  Please try.

With the current shapshot, you can force the use of the Unix configure
script resp. compilation rules -- FreeType's mechanism to recognize
Unix is not very reliable.

> trpinfo:/usr/src/freetype-2.0.1# make install

Only the Unix platform has `make install'.
