trying to build without X

hi,

  i'm trying to build freetype on my isp so that i can use it in php. 
My problem comes because my isp doesn't have any X stuff installed.  i
tried using the ./configure --without-x, but it didn't seem to help. 
The error i am getting is:

so, is it possible to build this.  i think all i want at this point is
the libraries.  Like i said, i just need this for php.  i appreciate any
advice that anyone could give me.  Thanks.
