I'm using dvd+rw-tools (growisofs) to burn images to DVD-R(W) media on a
pioneer a04 drive under FreeBSD 4.7

from what I've read on dvd+rw-tools the name is simply to indicate it
supports the +RW format. Anything it can do under +R(W) it can also do
with -R(W) as long as it supports the drive.

My mkisofs (on which growisofs, from dvd+rw-tools, depends if you are
burning from a filesystem) was from the dvdrecord package. It all seems to
work fine. And not a hint of windows.
