Hi Julián,
for "-dao", the size of the data must be known in advance. If you burn
a normal image file, there is no problem as cdrecord can see the file
size. To write from a pipe or a fifo, try specifying the size with the
"tsize=#" parameter.
dvdrtools v0.1.3 is based on a quite old version of cdrecord (1.11a15 of
February 2002); you may also want to try Robert M. Stockmann's patch to
put DVD-R recording support into the current cdrtools-2.0:
