yes exactly. if you enable this option you can add special tag to have a read ackowledgement (if receiver accept to display image). it was devellop before mailjet or mailchimp module. At least allow this standard feature for dolibarr without module

What was the purpose of this, have a readreceipt for mass mailings ?
