My, perhaps some-not-humble, opinion is that Windows should only be used as a development platform for Windows stuff. For any other type of serious engineering development, use Linux. But, I'm a notorious Linux/Unix/BSD curmudgeon who has been a Unix/Linux/BSD "fanboy" since before many on this list were even born :-)
