When you change the contents of a Makefile.am you'll need to play by
the developer rules. See the README regarding which versions of
automake/autoconf/libtool that you'll need.
You'll also want to start with the ./bootstrap command followed by
./configure --enable-maintainer-mode
These should fix your problems.
