I noticed another more or less cosmetical thing which looks like
left over debug code but I'm not sure (or what purpose do they
serve?).

In rlog.c lines 479, 490, 493 there are calls to "complain" with
"HEY: ... yes|no" which depending on the size of the RCS file print
a lot of messages to stderr.
