It turns out that I see similar (although different) problems with the 'new'
version I downloaded as well.

I also found a workaround - the problem only shows itself if I mix 'DOS format'
and 'UNIX format' versions of a file - taking it off-site and editing it
changed the line terminator from just character 10 (the UNIX way) to character
13 followed by character 10 (the DOS way). I guess this extra character is
messing up something somewhere - I know the RCS ,v format only deals in line
numbers, and so shouldn't be affected by extra carriage returns, but perhaps
the code of 'ci' is using 'seek' or some such to skip through the files.
Whatever, it looks a bit like a bug to me, and I guess it would be in the UNIX
version as well. I'm away for a few days but will look into this, see if I can
reproduce and fix it in a UNIX environment. Perhaps I can't though - the code
is so old and stable now that I would be surprised if I could find a bug in it
- but I will try, and report back here.

Thanks for your reply.

Chris.
