By the time supper was over, the rain was pouring
down. Thegulf was dark blue and the pasture fields adream. He crushed back the mad
words ofpassion that rushed to his lips.
Allthe lost colour and laughter of life seemed to
have returned.
It must be something connected withthe jug. Lets
laugh at it then, said Stanton Grundy. He could not save the jug but he deflected
slightly the MoonMans aim.
My shins been aching scandalously for two
days.
And very tired, for he had been picking potatoes
all day.
I wonder, he thought wistfully, what it would be
like to beloved. Somebody had come up to him onthe veranda and said archly, Dont
DARE to say you dont know ME. This was not at all what he hadlooked for. I always
carried it round ina folder in my breast pocket.
Brian went to the house and asked him if he had
seen thecalves.
Allthe lost colour and laughter of life seemed to
have returned. Penny felt a fine glow of victorious satisfaction with himself.

her brilliant eyes and her wind-ruffled hair.

Itwas getting very dark, and he was
frightened.
The Duncan Darksought to be ashamed of themselves.
Well both be bad and wicked together then, Brian.

Its burned up with all the rest of the spare-room
things.
The ghostly rival of thirty years was laid
atlast.
The wind was offshoreand the waves were not high,
but they made a strange, sobbing, lonely sound.
Little Sam had already spent many lonely evenings
this fall. Most people thought itserved him right for wearing pyjamas.
Then he thought she might suspect his real feelings
on thematter and be weeping over them. Margaret smiled and put her arm around
him.
Anyhow, if anybody had got it I reckon hed never
have got homealive, said Stanton Grundy.
You shouldnt be out without a jacket on a night
likethis. And very tired, for he had been picking potatoes all day.
