So far I have changes to configure itself.  I'm a novice at autoconfigure.  Any 
references as to how to run it?  Autoconf?  What version, Cygwin lists about a 
dozen.

Sure!  Remeber that the ./configure script, and the Makefile.in are generated 
from configure.ac and Makefile.am so the patches should be against those files.

   There are still problems with missing headers, etc. but I will be
   willing to supply patches for at least some of the issues.

Patches welcome, though if you plan on sending many non-significant changes 
then we will need a copyright assignment from you.  Would you like to sign such 
an assignment?
