Hey Peter,

I tried to look at this myself during the last day. I was in way over my head,
_but_ I found this sentence in the gnu troff reference manual [1] under
"interpolating registers" along the way:

> If the register is undefined, it is created and assigned a value of
‘0’,

Maybe this helps. :)
