Is that because of the single quotes surrounding spaces?  Are quoted
strings not permitted?

According to the spec[1], you should use double quotes instead:

Quoting must be done by enclosing the argument between double quotes and escaping the double quote character, 
backtick character ("`"), dollar sign ("$") and backslash character ("\") by 
preceding it with an additional backslash character.

Otherwise, I think what you have above is ok.
