You're not running in a language environment > that precludes utf-8 or something? Got the issue. My desktop system language environment is en_IN (English (India)). And those codes are coming because of this. When I changed the language environment to en_US.UTF-8, Emacs is working fine. [PS: sorry about the half cooked last email. Pressed C-c C-s by mistake]
