A most understandable error!
Regarding the discussion you refer to, drastically raising auto-revert-interval
cannot be a practical solution in the general case, nor was it likely proposed
as such. Even with the patch, polling will be used in many cases, including:
filenotify failure (from running out of file descriptors, for example); deleted
file; and anything matching auto-revert-notify-exclude-dir-regexp.
