I thought I could reproduce by

(defun gnutls-available-p () t)

entering an IMAP group, killing gnutls-cli and then exiting, but in that
case Gnus just restarted a new connection and sent the marks over,
unfortunately.  

Well, it's nice that it works :-), but it means that it's not that easy
to reproduce...
