Thanks for the explanation, I just added this to my .bashrc and
everything started to work fine again:
if [[ $TERM =~ ^xterm ]];
then
TERM=xterm-256color
PROMPT_COMMAND='echo -ne
"\033]0;${USER}@${HOSTNAME%%.*}:${PWD/$HOME/~}\007"'
else
PROMPT_COMMAND=""
fi
However what really surprises me is that emacs 23.1 didn't got the
prompt wrong with my old PROMPT_COMMAND.
