bug#3412: macros clear echo area

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

Do this:

C-x C-(
M-! echo hi
C-x C-)
C-x e

and you get in the echo area:
(Type e to repeat macro)
instead of what you used to get:
hi

Also now typing F4 you get an empty echo area (again instead of hi which 
would have made sense).

Also now typing M-x call-last-kbd-macro you get an empty echo area (I'm
supposing you used to get hi, but don't know for sure).
