For what it's worth: I just noticed that if I do M-x menu-set-font
RET, then choose BItstream Vera Sans Mono Regular 14, and _then_
decrease-text-scale, the newly-displayed smaller font is indeed
Bitstream. That means this problem isn't as annoying as I originally
thought, because I generally run this command at the start of my
session anyway.
