Start Emacs with Emacs -Q. Type some text and move point into that text. Do
M-x longlines-mode
and then
M-: (insert "\n")
This will insert a space instead of "\n".
In GNU Emacs 22.1.50.1 (i386-mingw-nt5.1.2600)
of 2007-07-04
Windowing system distributor `Microsoft Corp.', version 5.1.2600
