By "dired by date", do you mean `C-u C-x d t RET ...', which adds "t" to
dired-listing-switches before running dired?
If so, the analog would be to allow a prefix arg to dired-find-file (bound
to `f' and `e') and dired-advertised-find-file (bound to `RET') to have the
same effect (when find-file-run-dired is set).
