In GNU Emacs 21.1.1 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll bars)
of 2001-10-25 on poincare.math.northwestern.edu
mouse-2 on modeline seems to do what I want:
`Mouse-2'
`Mouse-2' on a mode line expands that window to fill its frame.
I think that's great, and thanks for changing it.
However, Emacs NEWS says
** Mouse-sensitive mode line.
Currently, the following actions have been defined:
- Mouse-1 on the buffer name in the mode line switches between two
buffers.
- Mouse-2 on the buffer-name switches to the next buffer, and
M-mouse-2 switches to the previous buffer in the buffer list.
- Mouse-3 on the buffer-name displays a buffer menu.
The last 3 seem to be false, Mouse-2, M-mouse-2 & Mouse-3. Tooltips
tells me that
mouse-1 = previous buffer
mouse-3 = next buffer
Which I think was RMS's idea!
The manual only refers us to tooltips, which I don't think is a good
documentation idea. The Emacs info node "Mode Line Mouse" says:
The commands above apply to areas of the mode line which do not
have special mouse bindings of their own. Some areas, such as the
buffer name and the major mode name, have their own special mouse
bindings. Emacs displays information about these bindings when you
hold the mouse over such a place (*note Tooltips::).
