Im running java 1.31_01 on my Windows 98 machine.
That makes two pieces of proprietary software. That is a shame, on
ethical grounds; I suspect that you have paid a practical price for it
too.

the machine simply dies.
I think the commands that trigger the problem invoke the proprietary
Java software, so I suspect this was provoked by a bug in that
software, to which Windows reacted wildly. (Windows has a tendency to
crash when user programs look at it the wrong way.) Since both of
them are proprietary software, you're helpless.
I recommend you switch to GNU/Linux--it doesn't crash just because
some user program has a problem. And if it does have a bug, users
have the freedom to try to fix it.
