"Used to" does not mean "like".
The only problem I can ever imagine with changing the default is if the
user sloppily marks files for deletion, knowing that if she messes up
and marks a directory she didn't mean to delete, Emacs will bark.
But that's what the confirmation prompt is for.

I agree with Sergei that the default should be changed.
