True.  Sounds like a documentation issue.  What if the modeline
changed to say "Click below to accept default" when find-file or dired
asks for a pathname?  Or maybe the minibuffer could momentarily change
to 2 (or more) lines so that there is room for an extra message?

Of course, if you can use a mouse, I guess the best thing would be to
have a popup.
