GDB failure under SPARC Solaris 9

Using a program compiled using GCC 4.2.1, I am unable to debug using 
gdb 6.4 or gdb 6.6.  This happens with both versions:

% gdb utilities/gm

I am able to debug a trivial program with gdb 6.4.
