File descriptors and GDB

Does anyone know if GDB closes open sockets / file descriptors when it
starts?  We have a client application that launches test applications
under a debugger and when we use GDB as that debugger, all of our socket
communication is shut down in our client application.  No communication
= poof.

I know C-Shell has this functionality, but I was hoping GDB wouldn't...

Any tips or leads to documentation that I couldn't find in my hunt for
an answer would be greatly appreciated!!
