i have tried compiling both gdb-5.0 and gdb+dejagnu-20010413. both times,
configure seems to run mostly through, then at the end i get:

checking for tgetent in -ltermlib... yes
checking for X... libraries /usr/X11R6/lib, headers /usr/X11R6/include
configure: error: *** Gdb does not support host i386-unknown-openbsd2.8
Configure in /tmp/gdb+dejagnu-20010413/gdb failed, exiting.

so i guess i'm stuck with 4.16? but i'd suggest putting the error at the
top. then i wouldn't have to watch configure run through for several
minutes to learn that it can't finish anyway.

I suspect this is the GDB bundled with your release of OpenBSD and likely contains unapproved patches. I'd first clarify exactly which GDB you're running.

The other thing to try is to grab a current stapshot and then try tweeking the config files so that GDB-current recognizes OpenBSD. I'd just clone the NetBSD/FreeBSD stuff. Open can't be that different. Hmm, on second thoughts, does your system still use a.out rather then elf?
