With help by David Anderson and Peter Schauer
now gdb builds on SGI and does not segfault,
but when stopping at the first breakpoint I get
5 times
xxgdb error: regular expression matching failed (failure stack overflow)
It doesn't seem to hurt for the moment but it doesn't sound good.
