I don't have any comment. Gawk uses facilities that have
been in Linux for decades; it should be possible to backport
it quite a ways, but I'm not going to do any experiments.

Let's see. You do need a C99 compiler, but that may
be it.

If someone finds issues I'm happy to evaluate if they are
worth addressing or not.
