It was quite a few years ago now, so I can't remember where I read it, 
but I think 22nd April 1977 refers to the day awk was initially 
released, though I might be misremembering that. I regret I didn't 
record anything more than the date in my birthday reminders list.

I've just spent about an hour googling and can't shed any light on it, 
unfortunately. Sorry.
