Then perhaps there should perhaps be a more formal formulation: "bison-2a is only supported for use with m4-1.4.3", perhaps with an explanation that bison might work with earlier versions of m4, but there are no guarantees.
In addition, I think Bison should make some check for version of m4. For example, if bison is run, and m4 is old, a warning should perhaps be issued. And when people report bugs, there should perhaps be a printout of some sort, showing which m4 version was used.
