I'm not on macOS and don't use Aquamacs, so this is a guess. I moved
that variable from style/shortvrb.el into tex-style.el with this
change[1]. I think the issue is that you load the new style/shortvrb.el
with the old tex-style.el. Can you please check any duplications in
Emacs with 'M-x list-load-path-shadows RET' and/or check your file
system for AUCTeX file remainders from other installation(s)?
