Though always pleasant and courteous,he makes no
obvious attempt to impress or win you.
Germannewspapers either tucked brief items in
inconspicuous corners orprinted nothing at all.
That, however, was aminor detail beside the
question of food.
I knew nothing about it till I got back ten days
later.
We newspapermen were especiallyfond of doing this
in the Kaiserhof bar. In the capital itself I saw relatively few soldiers. Still,
after two months inGermany, that didnt faze me.
But such a peace may be only atruce, followed by
another war in the not-distant future. The final link in this chain ofreasoning
brought England into the picture.
You went around the corner to buy a bottle ofbrandy
for the occasion. To tell the truth, I was a bit fed-up with this wartime Berlin
life.
You may be able to getsomething on the platform if
youre quick. Since it was a damp cold, its penetrating qualitywas far greater than
our winter weather.
The coaches, alreadywell-filled from previous
stations, were jammed to overflowing. So imports of all kindswere being curtailed.
Ifelt I was getting out just in time, and what I learned afterwardsamply justified
my foreboding.
When I wasthere, you could get a cup of coffee, but
at twice the former price.
I conferred atlength on this question with Dr. You
hit upon acigar that suited your fancy.
When the daily stock had been sold out, the
shopclosed for the day.
They feel that a disguised tribute is worth
theprice, so long as it is kept within bounds.
Of course, that is a personal impression. This
train was fast and kept to schedule.
The trouble was that their Reichsmarkssimply
couldnt connect with what they were after.
The only time thoserelations threatened to become
strained was when the Russo-Finnish Warbroke out.
Leaning out of the window, I hailed the conductor.
The windowswere filled with attractive displays.
People told me gleefully about one recentinstance.
