Linux Magazine (Munich) www.linux-magazine.com ... which calls itself
'the magazine for advanced Linux know-how'

o Security links of various major distros
          http://www.debian.org/security/
          http://www.mandrakesecure.net
          http://www.redhat.com/errata/
          http://www.redhat.com/mailing-lists/
          http://www.sco.com/support/security/
          http://www.slackware.com/lists/
          http://www.suse.de/uk/private/support/security/

o NETWORKING MADE EASY: In today's high tech world, we all have to deal
with computers. Whether it is part of a multinational's work
group or just a small office/home office, the chances are we need
at some point to interconnect to a network. Here GNU/Linux
rules above all others, writes John Southern.
        Also - Linux in LANS
             - Network configuration under Red Hat 8.0
             - The SuSE Distribution Network configuration (YaST)
             - Using Windows shares
             - Samba share configuration
             - Integrating NT4 domains with Samba
             - User management and authentication for Samba

WORTH NOTING: Microsoft will soon be withdrawing its support
for Windows NT4, but Samba for Linux offers a free alternative
that provides both users and administrators with a familiar
  environment.

o CHECK POINT SecurePlatform with firewall: CheckPoint's
SecurePLatform provides a hardened Red Hat Linux with
Check Point's own Firewall-1NG and allows you to install a
firewall yourself within a few minutes -- without any
assistance from systems integrators or consultants.

o MS OFFICE UNDER LINUX: Codeweavers, the makers of
Crossover Office -- with more than a little
help from Wine -- promise to get the Microsoft
Office Suite and a few other Windows programs running
on Linux without any hassle. www.codeweavers.com
Single license price approx US$ 55.

o SOFT HARDWARE, THE BOCHS PC EMULATOR: Though the FLOSS
community has developed free alternatives to complex Office
suites, PC emulators have proven challenging so far. Despite
poor performance, the Bochs ('box') project is at least
  interesting for test purposes. http://bochs.sourceforge.net

o TIDYING UP DOCUMENTS: Part 2 of the LaTeX series
looks at putting some structure into your documents.
Divide documents into sections and chapters,
creating tables of contents, using various list
formats and tables, and working with cross-references
          and footnotes.

o BLOCKS AND MESSAGES: The SMB (Server Message Block) protocol
specifies how Windows computers communicate on a network.
SMB provides access to files, printers, serial lines, and
communication channels, such as named pipes and mailshots.
Samba is a free SMB implementation. Just what is SMB --
  an intro www.samba.org/cifs/docs/what-is-smb.html

o MySQL BACKUP: Admins often tend to use mysqldump,
a component from the MySQL package, when they
need to backup MySQL data. But a more convenient
          method is MySQL backup.

o PARANOIA FOR BEGINNERS: Info security on GNU/Linux.
        http://www.kerneli.org/
        http://loop-aes.sourceforge.net/
        http://gsu.linux.org.tr/wipe/
        http://freshmeat.net/projects/securedelete/
        http://wipe.sourceforge.net/
        http://www.outguess.org/
        http://wwwrn.inf.tu-dresden.de/~westfeld/f5.html
        http://linux01.gwdg.de/~alatham/stego.html
        http://www.erikyyy.de/tempest/
        http://tinfoihat.shmoo.com
        http://www.zapatopi.net/afdb.html

o KEEPING IN SYNC: rsync program allows you to
synchronise local or remote files and directories
using the "rsync remote-update protocol" that
first checks for differences between source and target
before data transfer commences, thus minimizing
  transfer volume.

o Stadrin is an effective enterprise tool for
raising security levels, esp where the static
passwords authentication systems are no longer
          sufficient.

o INTERACTIVE 3D worlds with Coin and Qt.

o LinuxBIOS Project: Putting GNU/Linux on
          your motherboard.

o KNewsticker DELIVERS THE latest news hot off the press.

o Icewm, YOU CAN use an oldermachine as a
          graphical desktop with light-weight alternative
          window managers (blackbox, fluxbox, aewm,
pwm, larswm) and panels (fbpanel, hpanel,
          fspanel).

o COLOUR CODES: syntax highlighting can improve read-
ability when integrating your source code into a
  website or document.

o CREATING CD images with mkisofs & dd

o EVER SINCE WOODY, Debian GNU/Linux 3.0 hit the scene,
users have started turning to the flagship amongst
free distributions. Some help to counter initial
  obstacles from Dr Linux.

o BraveGNUWorld by Georg C F Greve looks at
Ninvaders (clone of the console classic
          Space Invaders), GNOME-Annotate (make notes
while working with a web browser), RULE (helping
GNU/Linux work on earlier generation hardware)
          - http://home.swipnet.se/darshiva/software.html
          - http://www.rule-project.org

o ON THE CD: Kolab server (Germany's IT security federal
agency has contracted three firms to provide a Free
Software groupware solution accessible with Windows
running Outlook and GNU/Linux running KDE clients),
Amaya (browsing/authoring tool to publish docs on
the Web... WYSIWYG style of interface), RH8 updates,
games (3D Open GL Action RPG Space Simulator...)

        o Next month:
          - Groupware
          - Mail User Agents
          - Multi distributions
          - Lindows
          - Bootable CDs
