axiom.el became fricas.el + fricas-cpl.el + efricas, is part of the
fricas distribution, and actively maintained.
I don't think it would be difficult to backport it to axiom (or
open-axiom). The main issue is that it requires fricas to wrap any
output fricas sends in markers, grep the fricas sources for |$ioHook|.
